Barrowlands is an American progressive black metal band formed in 2011 and based out of Portland, Oregon. The band was formed by drummer Martti Hill (Lykaia, Sculptered, Snares of Sixes) and guitarist-vocalist David Hollingsworth (Mary Shelley) when their respective bands went to seed. The band is an amalgam of both’s previous projects bringing along members from both bands; Ray Lorenz (Cello) from Mary Shelly and Joe DePaul who had played bass for both bands. Guitarist Jacob Williams was brought in to fulfill duties on lead guitar.
The new project first bore fruit in 2012 with it’s eponymous demo first released as a digital download by Den of Dead Trees Recordings before being released on cassette by Acephale Winter. The demo garnered much praise and was listed in CVLT Nations ‘Top Six Blackened Demos of 2012’. In 2014 Barrowlands produced their first record ‘Thane’, released on vinyl through Sick Man Getting Sick (Germany), cassette though Tridroid Records (USA) and in 2015 on CD through Pest Productions (China). The band creates music they believe captures the awe and spectacle of the Cascading backdrop that surrounds them. “The air hangs heavy around this music, like a shroud of oppressive sorrow” wrote No Clean Singing about the release while Metal Riot wrote “This is music you could blare at the skies and stand atop any metaphorical mountains peak silently professing your will to the cosmos to”.
In 2015 Barrowlands wintered the departure of Jacob Williams and Joe Depaul only to come full circle with the addition of bassist Chris Gaye and guitarist Jay Caruso who had both worked previously with members of the the band. Their additions solidified Barrowlands’ progressive black metal sound and culminated with the recording of their second album ‘Tynidr’, recorded by Billy Anderson (Ludicra, Agollach, Eight Bells) and mastered by Jori Appedaile (Eneferens) to be released in the fall of 2017 on Vendetta Records.
Tyndir, a norse word for fallowed ground, speaks of the tension between nature and man and the realization that nature will ultimately reclaim all that man claims sacred. The music, at times melancholy and restrained and, at others, urgent and aggressive, illustrates the growth of the band and while still solidly rooted in the black metal tradition explores the fringes of other genres that surround it.
Barrowlands’ has shared the stage with Jex Thoth, Year of No Light, Wreck and Reference, Arkona, Numenorean, Wayfarer, Dreadnought, and Falls of Rauros.
